Personal training can be a great way to get fit and stay healthy, but if you have a disability, it can make it difficult to exercise on your own. At Gymantix, I pride myself on inclusivity and accessibility for all, and as a specialist personal trainer I am trained and qualified to work with people of all abilities, no matter what. Your personal training plan will be designed especially for you and your individual abilities and goals. You will receive dedicated instruction and close guidance from your trainer, and includes a bespoke meal plan designed especially for you and your goals. Choose from 1, 2 or 3 training sessions per week.

What is Personal Training for People With a Disability?

It can be difficult for a person with a disability to get the necessary exercise to keep healthy, for a variety of reasons. A person may feel their disability means they just cannot exercise. Or perhaps they may lack access to appropriate equipment or skilled trainers, or they may feel reluctant to exercise in public.

Personal training can give those with a disability the tailored assistance they require to meet their fitness objectives. Our trainers will analyse your requirements and create a safe and effective fitness plan for you.

Personal trainers provide support, inspiration and motivation, which can help keep you on course even when progress feels impossible. We often find that individuals lacking in confidence feel more confident and independent after engaging with personal training, and we love to see it happen!

Why Train With Gymantix?

Our goal at Gymantix is to deliver high-quality personal training to those with disabilities. We consider you as an individual, not just your disability. If you’re looking for a personal trainer with experience in training people with disabilities, or if you have any kind of disability and just want to get in shape, you’ve come to the right place.

Each disability has its own challenges. Because the amount of ability or symptoms of each individual with a disability might vary greatly, we cannot simply follow a pre-written PT plan. To get the most out of our sessions together, we must carefully examine, adjust, and design unique tasks for you. This is why everyone that comes to Nxtep has an assessment, in which we figure out what you can accomplish, we listen to your goals and what you want, and from there we develop a personal training plan with you. We love getting people exercising, no matter what their level of ability.

We are not trying to cure your impairment – that is not the aim or the point. We’re here to assist you in exercising despite your disability. No matter what, you’ll always see an improvement in your strength, balance, coordination, body composition, and overall physical aptitude by sticking to a personal training regime.

Your Consultation

The first step is to set up a time to talk with one of our personal trainers, who will do a free Initial Consultation (this can be done online, over the phone, or in person) to figure out your basic training goals, needs, and anything else we need to know.

The next step is to come in for a more thorough, all-around physical consultation. We’ll ask you to do some basic movements and exercises to see how fit you are and discuss your physical limitations or injuries. We’ll also talk about your lifestyle, diet, goals, and more. If you come to your first appointment in person, you may be able to do your Comprehensive Consultation the same day.

The Comprehensive Consultation will help your trainer figure out where you are now, where you want to go, and how best to help you get there, so that we can make your Personal Training Plan. This thorough meeting will go over the following:

  • Your Personal Goals
  • Current Lifestyle
  • Exercise History
  • Your Disability or Impairment
  • Body Composition Analysis
  • Functional Movement Screen
  • Postural Assessment
  • Nutritional Analysis
  • Identification of Barriers

Improving Your Strength and Flexibility

People with a physical disability may struggle with general fitness, strength and flexibility, depending on their disability. Personal trainers are able to focus your sessions on building the muscles you are able to use, and improving your range of motion. We teach clients how to use proper form while doing exercises, taking into account your physical abilities or limitations.

In terms of pure physical strength, strength and resistance training helps you gain lean mass and improves bone density, which may help avoid falls by increasing core strength balance, if this is a risk.

  • Improved Mobility: Enhanced ability to perform daily activities with less reliance on carers.
  • Increased Strength and Coordination: Significant progress in controlling movements and performing exercises.
  • Better Mental Health: Boosted confidence and a positive outlook towards exercise challenges.
  • Record-Setting Cardio Performance: Achieving personal bests in wheelchair sprints and endurance exercises.

Leon’s Journey

Personal Training Journey

Hello, and welcome to my personal training page. Since October 2023, I have had the honor of working with Leon, a determined and resilient client who has faced numerous challenges due to his medical history. Leon has cerebral palsy, epilepsy (currently in remission), semi-blindness, left-side hemiplegia from a previous stroke, and scoliosis. Additionally, he underwent a procedure to drain fluid from his brain 20 years ago. Despite these obstacles, Leon’s progress over the past year has been truly inspiring.

Initial Challenges

Leon experiences significant difficulty with coordination and motor function, particularly in controlling his limbs. While he can walk with the aid of a walking stick, he struggles with spasticity and an uneven gait. His upper and lower body movements are limited, and his left side hemiplegia results in a pronounced twist in his left arm.

Training Goals and Achievements

Our training sessions have been focused on improving Leon’s ability to perform Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and enhancing his overall physical and mental well-being. Key areas of focus include:

  • Range of Motion: Exercises to increase flexibility and mobility.
  • Motor Control: Techniques to improve coordination and reduce muscle spasticity.
  • Strength Building: Utilizing light dumbbells, kettlebells, and resistance bands to develop muscle strength.
  • Cardio Endurance: Engaging in activities such as using the SkiErg machine and his favorite recumbent cycle.
  • Balance and Stability: Incorporating step-up exercises and balance techniques to enhance gait and posture.
  • Flexibility: Stretching routines to improve muscle elasticity and reduce spasms.
  • Functional Strength: Using cable resistance machines with support to boost overall strength.

Remarkable Progress

Leon’s dedication and hard work have led to significant improvements:

  • Enhanced Mobility: Reduced reliance on his walking stick and improved walking ability.
  • Increased Strength and Coordination: Greater control and use of limbs, especially on his left side.
  • Better Balance and Posture: Improved gait and reduced scoliosis impact through targeted exercises.
  • Improved Mental Health: Increased confidence and a positive approach to exercise challenges.
  • Cognitive and Spatial Awareness: Enhanced perception and learning abilities through consistent training.

A Safe and Inclusive Approach

As Leon’s personal trainer, my commitment is to provide a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment that caters to his unique needs. Our training sessions are designed with Leon’s best interests in mind, ensuring that each exercise is tailored to his abilities and goals. I am dedicated to helping Leon achieve his fitness objectives through a client-centered approach, focusing on his progress and well-being.

Looking Forward

I am incredibly proud of Leon’s achievements and the remarkable progress he has made. His journey from strength to strength is a testament to his resilience and determination. As his personal trainer, I look forward to continuing to support Leon in reaching his fitness goals and improving his quality of life.

Ben’s Journey

Personal Training Journey

Hello, and welcome to my personal training page. Since November 2023, I have had the privilege of working with Ben, a 25-year-old client who is neurodiverse and on the autistic spectrum. Ben also has ADHD and faces challenges related to obesity, anxiety, and social interaction.

Initial Challenges

Ben found it difficult to interact socially and spent most of his time in his room. It took many weeks of encouragement to convince him to give my services a try. With patience and support, Ben agreed to start personal training sessions.

Training Goals and Achievements

Our training sessions focus on improving Ben’s physical health and boosting his confidence. Key areas of focus include:

  • Strength Training: Using free weights like barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, and bench press exercises to build upper body strength.
  • Stretching and Agility: Exercises to reduce leg pain and spasms, and improve flexibility and balance using agility ladders and step-up exercises.
  • Cardio Endurance: Calorie-burning challenges on the SkiErg machine and Tornado cross-trainer cycle.
  • Motor Control and Coordination: Techniques to enhance coordination and overcome musculoskeletal issues with balance and resistance band exercises.
  • Weight Loss and Muscle Development: A combination of light dumbbells, kettlebells, and cable resistance machines to build muscle and reduce weight.

Remarkable Progress

Ben’s dedication and hard work have led to significant improvements:

  • Enhanced Mobility: Improved strength and coordination, reducing leg spasms and increasing range of motion.
  • Increased Endurance: Longer PT sessions, progressing from 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Better Mental Health: Increased confidence and engagement in personal training sessions.
  • Greater Independence: More active lifestyle, including taking up walking outdoors.

Building Trust and Encouragement

The relationship and trust I have built with Ben have been crucial to his progress. My kindness, encouragement, and support have helped Ben overcome his initial anxiety and self-consciousness. His parents have expressed their gratitude for the positive influence on Ben’s life, noting that he now confidently accesses the community and takes pride in his achievements.

A Safe and Inclusive Approach

As Ben’s personal trainer, I am committed to providing a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment that caters to his unique needs. Our client-centered program ensures that each exercise is tailored to Ben’s abilities and goals. I continuously adapt our training to match his progress, ensuring he remains challenged and motivated.
